IL-SEN: Giannoulias hard to pin down on Guantanamo detainees
Democratic Senate candidate Alexi Giannoulias came under fire on Monday for failing to make clear his position on the proposal for Guantanamo detainees to be brought to the Thomson Correctional Center in northwestern Illinois. Chicago Sun-Times columnist Lynn Sweet wrote on Monday that Giannoulias had been criticised by state GOP chairman Pat Brady for refusing to express an opinion on the Thomson plan, even though it had received the support of most of the other Democratic Senatorial candidates.
Later that day, when Giannoulias did come out in favour of the Thomson proposal, he hardly gave it a ringing endorsement. The Rockford Register Star quotes Giannoulias as saying that the plan was "something we have to take a look at".
